Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, has become a significant force in Nigerian entertainment, particularly in northern Nigeria. With its vibrant production of films that often explore themes of love, marriage, and social dynamics, Kannywood has had a considerable influence on cultural practices, including traditional marriage rituals. In many parts of northern Nigeria, including Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State, traditional marriage practices have been deeply ingrained in the social fabric. However, the influence of modern media, particularly Kannywood films, has raised questions about the extent to which these traditional practices are being influenced or reshaped. Kannywood films often depict romantic relationships, marriage customs, and gender roles, which can challenge or reinforce existing cultural norms. This study aims to examine the influence of Kannywood films on traditional marriage practices among women in Ungogo, focusing on how these films shape women’s perceptions, expectations, and experiences of marriage in the context of evolving cultural practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While Kannywood films have gained widespread popularity, their influence on traditional marriage practices, particularly among women, is not fully understood. In Ungogo Local Government Area, the clash between modern film narratives and traditional customs may create tensions or lead to shifts in how women view marriage. For instance, the portrayal of idealized romantic relationships in films may shape expectations about love and marriage, leading to changes in women’s preferences or behavior regarding marriage. However, the extent to which these films directly affect women’s views on marriage customs, including aspects such as dowries, matchmaking, and marriage age, is not well-documented. This study seeks to investigate how Kannywood films influence the expectations, choices, and perceptions of women regarding traditional marriage practices in Ungogo.
